Historic Episcopal church

If you’re looking for an interesting place to visit during your next trip to Morristown, New Jersey, you may want to try St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. This historic church is still active and has roots that go back to the early 1760s. The church building is an example of gothic revival architecture, and the congregation has traditionally worshiped in the High Church tradition.

The original church was built in 1828, and the cornerstone was laid on May 14. The church was consecrated on December 4, 1828. Initially, the builders built the church with a design that favored on-time attendance. The chancel faced South Street, and the congregation faced each other, which would discourage latecomers from attending the service. However, this design was later changed when the church was enlarged in 1858.

The church’s structure was renovated to add space and accommodate a heating system. In 1979, the church was placed on the State and National Register of Historic Places. A few years later, the church underwent extensive renovations, including removal of the steeple. The church building now shows signs of wear and tear, and a new roof is required.
